Arthritis

WHAT IS IT?

oa-kneeArthritis means inflammation and or swelling of the joints. There are many different types of arthritis. Osteoarthritis(OA) is the most common form of arthritis with over 32 million people afflicted in the United States. It is known for causing disability, when one can no longer perform daily tasks, thereby decreasing the quality of one’s life. OA has a chronic progressive degenerative nature, although sudden onset of pain is possible. It is more common in people with:

  • OBESITY
  • IMMOBILITY
  • MUSCLE WEAKNESS
  • OVERUSE OF JOINT
  • FAMILY HISTORY
  • AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Osteoarthritis causes cartilage (which cushions the end of bones) to breakdown down. Without cartilage the bone, without protection can grind on another bone causing friction, further wear and tear and create further inflammation.

  • PAIN
  • STIFFNESS
  • DECREASED RANGE OF MOTION
  • SWELLING

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENTS?

The main goals of treatments are to reduce symptoms and improve the quality of life, management and interventions can decrease pain and increase the range of motion of the joint. Remembering and acknowledging that PAIN IS NOT A NORMAL SIGN OF AGING and there are multiple therapies to consider prior to having surgery.

  • PHYSICAL EXCERSISE
  • WEIGHT LOSS
  • STRETCHING
  • HEAT/COLD PADS
  • NONSTEROIDAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDICATIONS
  • STEROIDS
  • PRP INJECTIONS: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) may alleviate symptoms of OA. Research has suggested the PRP may inhibit and slow down progression of Osteoarthritis, stimulate the form of new cartilage, increase the production of natural lubricating fluid thereby decreasing friction of bone to bone causing less pain.
  • HYALURONATE (GEL) INJECTIONS: Hyaluronate is used to treat OA knee pain in patients who have not improved with Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, exercise or physical therapy. Hyaluronan is a similar substance that naturally occurs in the knee. It acts as a lubricating shock absorber in the knee. As the knee is lubricated, it can move with less friction thereby lessening the pain of walking.

Was seen immediately. Everything worked like a well oiled machine -- I was in and out in less than 30 minutes! Great staff: Linda was professional, no nonsense, and a font of knowledge. I left informed, which is rare. Best experience in a medical setting I've had in years -- 10/10, would recommend.
